Reptile Birthday

Posted by Steve on 23rd Mar 2010

I have to admit that I had a great time putting together this party, right down to browsing through shops for supplies and putting together ideas and recipes.

Inspiration was taken from the Reptile Invitations that were sent to guests. The colours we chose to compliment our theme were orange, black, yellow with a splash of green.

Decorations

On arriving guests followed the Dinosaur Footprints to find the front door, and were welcomed by a coordinating door banner. By this stage the kids were excited and wanted to see what was behind the door...

In case of rain we printed the footprints out on lightweight polyproplene and cut out the shapes, we used a heavy duty tape to temporarily tape them to the footpath so they wouldn't blow away.

Inquire about your party and if we can supply footprints for your guestsTo give our table setting a more natural look we picked up a bamboo screen for under $30 from Bunnings and attached this to the wall. This really livened up the wall and made the banner stand out. For a splash or green we brought two ferns, one for each side of the table, and wrapped the basis in black to bring them into our theme. We chose the screen and ferns that we could use in our garden after the party but also have that reptile feel to them.

Parents

Parents were invited to stay, however we have found that by the age of 6 most parents were quiet happy to drop their child and return to collect them when the party was over.

Prepare a contact list prior to your party to include Parents Name, Child's Name and Contact number, just in case there are tears and a child needs to be collected early.

Food

Have some fun and name and label your food with names relating to your theme. For the reptile birthday we had

  • Snake Rolls = Sausage rolls
  • Croc Pies = Party pies
  • Turtle eggs (which were Red Tulip Bird Eggs - available around Easter time),
  • Frog swamp jelly (layered jelly with jelly snakes and frogs)
  • Dino Bread = bread cut out with a dinosaur cookie cutter and sprinkled with sprinkles that suited out themes.
  • Lizard Legs = marinated chicken wings

We purchased our mini jelly beans in yellow, orange and black from Goody Goody Gum Drops and a large bulk packet of jelly snakes.

Take Home Lolly Pops

The kids eyes nearly popped out of their little heads when they saw the size of our lolly pops and how many there were! Instead of lolly bags or lolly boxes that would have required me to source and purchase little nick-naks or lollies as take home gifts I decided to give lolly pops a go instead. I am so glad I did, they were a HUGE hit! We had them colour coordinated with our invitations and using our party colours orange, yellow and black.

Use your imagination and have a little fun when creating your centrepiece. I picked up a plant pot from Bunnings for under $15.00, not only did it keep with my theme but was also something I could make use of after the party. (Now I have an excuse to go to a nursery to find a plant for it - yeah for me!)

I found bricks of Florist Foam from Spotlight for under $5.00 each. After cutting down brick so that it would fit the pot I filled up the gaps with the left over foam. I then arranged the lolly pops by pressing the ends into the foam. Finally, to hide the florist foam I found some fake moss from Riot Art and Craft Stores which was around $5.00 for a rather large bag full.

Entertainers

Animal Tracks had a wonderful array of different reptiles to show. For 2 hours they entertained the kids and I was really surprised that they sat around in a circle mesmerised by Andrew and Stephanie, our hosts for the afternoon. The birthday boy was the centre of attention and given the privelidge of taking the animals around for each child to touch.

I have to admit that holding a birthday with the right entertainer really does make for a wonderful stress free birthday. The kids have a ball and all that is left for me to do is make sure everyone is enjoying themselves.

The Cake

Our cake was from The Cupcake Kitchen in Melbourne. We can recommend Anna's gorgeous cakes for their creativity and taste.
