Throwback to 2012: A First Birthday Filled with Whimsy

We’re dusting off a treasured memory from — the year our home learnt that joy can wear a very tall hat.

Setting the Scene

I still remember waking on the morning of our little one’s first birthday — the house humming with quiet excitement and the soft scent of cupcakes in the air. We’d transformed the living room into a playful, storybook world: bold stripes, bright pops of red and blue, and a towering hat poised above the cake table like a wink from mischief itself. Balloons curled and bobbed as if trying not to giggle, and I added the final flourishes with a grin I simply couldn’t hide. It felt like stepping into a daydream where nonsense was welcome, imagination had the keys, and laughter was the only dress code.

When the Party Sparkled to Life

As guests arrived, the magic snapped into focus. Tiny feet toddled across striped rugs, little hands reached for bobbing ribbons, and parents traded knowing smiles over red-and-white cups. Gentle games kept the mood sweet: soft toy “Things” to chase, a photo corner with oversized hats, and a cosy reading nook bubbling with rhymes and bubbles. The cake stood proudly — layers of red and white stacked just-so, crowned with a jaunty topper that looked ready to tip its hat at any moment. Every detail chimed together like a rhyme: cheerful, rhythmic, and delightfully a little bit silly.

A Year of Firsts in One Flicker

When the candles were lit, time held its breath. Our birthday babe blinked at the gentle glow, then let out a giggle so pure the whole room softened around it. In that shimmer of light, I realised this wasn’t merely a party; it was a celebration of a year of firsts — first smiles, first steps, first cuddles that refused to let go. As the confetti settled and the tall hat on the banner gave one last paper rustle, I tucked a striped napkin into the memory box. Perfectly imperfect, joyfully ours, and forever stamped with the wonder of 2012.

Here is what Nikki said about this event

"When my youngest of three kids turned one this summer, I knew it had to be fun. He is my only summer baby, so I finally got to plan a party outside. My 2 older kids were Thing 1 & Thing 2, and the birthday boy was Cat in the Hat.

I made all the decorations and food. It was fun to make things not so perfect, like an off centered cupcake stand and tall skinny candy jars.

I fell in love with the red, white and teal combination of colors. The ‘real’ Cat in the Hat came to read a book and the kids loved playing all the games, including pin the tail on Horton".
